After watching the awesome trailer, my girlfriend was so interested to see this movie... So, right after Fast Five, we went back again into the cinema to watch it... Movie marathon!! Yeah!!
THE STORY
(Alternate) earth was collapsing as it was plagued by a strong, horrifying creature known as vampires... At first, humanity seemed to lost its light for the war against the vampires brought so much damage upon mankind... That was until the Church raised and trained the Priests, extraordinary humans born with skills and powers enough to eradicate vampires... The Priests ended the war and under the order of the Church, the leftover vampires were imprisoned underground in certain areas... After the war, the Priests were disbanded by the Church for they fear the Priests' power might be used against them... Thus, having no sense of purpose anymore, all the Priests scattered around without any directions, lost and forgotten... Then, one day, a Priest (Paul Bettany) went against the Church's order to save his niece who was kidnapped by vampires... Upon his action, the war between vampires and humans finally reignited...
Directed by Scott Stewart, Priest is based on a graphic novel of the same name written by Min-Woo Hyung...
THE COOLNESS
The Cool Factor
Maggie Q!!
Many who had watched this would agree that this movie is really cool... The Priest (Paul Bettany) is cool...
In case u dont know, Paul was also in The Da Vinci Code... Click here
Maybe it's the way he talks or most probably it's the fact that he would go against anyone in order to protect the ones he cares about... or is it because of the irony? We always perceive a real life priest as gentle and weak but in this movie, the Priests (though no Christianity relations involved) are the saviors of humanity... With their wicked skills and cool killing tools, it's hard for us to deny that coolness... Am I right?
Cool way to kill...
Adding the coolness is the tools used by the characters... For example, the steampunk designed motorcycles... Aren't they lovely? Besides that, the weapons used by the Priests... Cross "shurikens", dagger, whip... Coolness...
The New Concept of Vampires
Most vampires in other movies are portrayed as human like, persuasive, flirty, and charming... Some are even glittery... Okey, enough with that Twilight remarks!!!! Ahemm... However, in this one, the vamps are nothing like humans... They are more like ants for they have a variety of types where each one of them serves different purposes... The type that can be seen the most is the one in the picture above... They hunt in large packs which is kinda similar to working ants... Then, they have the queen and the nest guardian... and there are also infected humans... These new concept is kinda attractive to me...
When I think about it, this movie is quite suitable to be made into a video game... Yeah, the various types of vampires, the big boss, cool action scenes... Yeap, video game material...
THE MINUS POINT
The Story
They focus on the wrong thing... The illustrative narration telling about the origin of the Priests and the war between the vamps and humans were very interesting and I really hoped that they would do a story on them... But instead, they have to make a story about rescuing a damsel in distress... Pfftt... The journey of the Priest and his sidekick, Hicks (Cam Gigandet), to find the girl was quite boring... However, I thought that this is maybe just a kick start for this movie before forming a franchise... Like the Priest said at the end, the queen is still alive... That signals a sequel... Maybe this whole movie is just an introduction and the next one will be the massive one... Dang... Thats what I think...
ALL IN ALL
Though the story is not engaging, other aspects of the movie are attractive enough for me to say that this movie is good... Not great, but good... Like I said before, maybe this is just a kick start... We'll see... My honey loved it though... She commented - "This is how a vampire movie should be like... Awesome!"... and yes, after that, she made a Twilight remark... "Not like glittery bla bla bla..."
3 out of 5 stars...
