Thor (2011)

A few seconds after the movie started, upon watching the opening montage of pages of Marvel's "Thor" comic book being flicked through in high speed as if Superman was reading it, my grrl asked me a question - "Is this based on a comic book?"... I simply replied, "Yup..."... Hearing my answer, she let out a mere sigh and said... "Dammit..."... Well, unlike me, my grrl is not a comic book fan... She doesn't really like to watch superhero movies (alien movies too) because she thinks that they're ridiculous and illogical... Super powers? Invincible body? She spits on them unless there are logical explanations about their presence or origins...

No, I didn't trick her to join me to watch the movie... I already told her before that it's about a Viking (Norse) god being thrown onto earth and becomes a superhero... Maybe it's because of the fact that we spent almost 9 hours at McDonald's at Dataran Pahlawan doing our work made her think that a midnight movie watching could be treated as a kind of reward... Well, it was indeed a reward for me since I've been wanting to see it after seeing the trailers months ago...

Luckily, at the end the movie, she told me that she liked the movie!! Yeay~ This proves that even a non-comic fan can enjoy this movie~

THE STORY

Thor was the heir to the throne of Asgard, a magical realm located thousands of light years away from our realm, where Earth is located... Though being granted with godlike strength and brutal battle skills, Thor was extremely arrogant... Being led into a traitor's trap, he waged a second war with Jotunheim, Asgard's archenemy... Because of that, his father, Odin, stripped off his powers and banished him to Earth... Odin put a curse on Thor and as long as he continues to act harshly without thinking, he would remain a mortal on Earth... Thus, he journeyed the land with a few friends that he encountered in order to prove that he's worthy of his powers and to get back to Asgard where he belonged...

THE GOOD

Loki

This guy, Tom Hiddleston, who played Loki did great in this movie... He's the best thing in this movie... He successfully portrayed the slick and ambitious (and slightly twisted) brother of Thor... He even has the right look to play his part... One look and I knew that he's gonna be traitorous and has a lot of tricks under his sleeves...

The Visuals

I loved what I saw... The visual effects which is CGI are really stunning... I love how they portray how the Asgard kingdom looks like... Very majestic and magical...

Jotunheim also looks impressive...

All realms are connected by the awesome Bifrost a.k.a the rainbow bridge... I love this place setting and the action that happened in there...

Besides the place setting, the CGI for the action part is also great...

The Destroyer was awesome!

Credits should be given also to the ones who created the costumes... The best costume goes to the frost giants!! Red eyes, icy cold skin... Brrrrilliant!!

As you can see, the movie is kinda an eye candy... Awesome effects and costume!

The Script

The script is one of the main aspect that makes this movie a success... Most of the characters' charm comes from the awesome script... I love to see how the Asgardians talk... Very noble like and royal... A satisfying amount of jokes is also inserted through the movie... It's really entertaining as it wins a lot of laughs from the audience... It's really funny~ The cutest line in the movie - "Meuou-neou?"...

THE BAD

Typical Overall Story

Royal sibling rivalry... One is brute but noble... The other is slick and evil... From the start I've already know how the story would develop... Thor would be banished and must find his worthiness and prove himself... Luckily, the process of him getting there is interesting to see...

Action Sequence

Yeah, I did say that the effects for the action scenes are great... but the action sequence is too simple... There's nothing new being shown... For me, the producers should elaborate the action part more... I mean, just drag the fight a bit longer and make the fight more bad-ass... The Destroyer is a fearsome enemy but Thor just destroy it with a few hammer swings? Come on, show some blood! Put up a better show for the audience... I think the satisfaction would come if the enemy is tough to beat... It would be more meaningful to kick ass a powerful opponent...

However, by this, I'm not saying the action is bad... It's good... but less satisfying (maybe it's just me...)

OVERALL

All in all, this movie is very entertaining... U don't even have to be a comic book fan in order for u to enjoy the movie... Look at my grrrl for instance... At first, she was quite skeptical where she thought that the movie would be nonsense but at the end of it, she was a bit into it... I said that because she said - "I wanna drive my car as fast as Thor when he flew with his hammer..."

3.5 out of 5 stars :-)
