A few days ago, I told my girlfriend that from reading the National Geographic Magazine that we stole, I found out that most animals are aggressive because of the presence of some particular genes in their bodies... If we remove these genes, the animals could be easily domesticated...
This has been researched and proven true by Dimitri Belyaev, a researcher in Russia, when he successfully domesticated silver foxes... He managed to remove the aggressive nature and made foxes that behave as similar to dogs where they are very friendly to humans...
Belyaev also proved that the aggressive behavior of wild animals are nature not nurture... All the violent acts and rampage are what they are... It's in their genes and nothing can change them... A wild animal will always be wild no matter how u raise it...
It made me think that maybe the same also applies to humans... Have u ever felt that u hate someone for no particular reason? It's like, just by glimpsing at them, u feel like kicking them to the gut and pee on them... Well, maybe all the hate comes from our genes...
If u are a racist person who hates Chinese or Indian or Malay for no particular reason, maybe all the hate inside came from ur genes... The hate was like passed to u from past generations or by ur ancestors...
And if we are able to remove the "hate gene" from our body, all the wars happening in the world would most probably end... Awesome!
Well, it sounds simple but the process of removing the genes might take decades to be successful... I too am not so sure how they do it... If u're interested to know, just damn Google it and try to understand the biological procedures urself... or get the March 2011 edition of National Geographic...
The study of the genes is still being undergone by Belyaev's students... They are trying to try to domesticate animals other than silver foxes... Who knows, from the research maybe they can bring peace to the world...
Then I told her that maybe this has to do with Noam Chomsky's innate theory where everyone was born with knowledge inside his/her head... Just take a look at some of the animals... For example, a duckling... Even though that particular duckling never saw an eagle before, when it sees one gliding high up in the sky and squawking, the duckling runs as fast as it could out of fear... How come it knows that the eagle is dangerous? It's because the duckling was born with the knowledge and instinct... Like I said before, it's all in the genes...
My girlfriend agreed with my thought by giving her own example - babies... How come babies know that they need to cry when they are hungry or hurt? Why don't they just wink their eye instead? Innate knowledge baby... Innate knowledge...
So, yeah... Most of our conversation are as serious as that... Hmm... Maybe it's not that serious, but u have to admit it was pretty deep... Genes, bio stuff, innate knowledge... Wow...
Anyway, the domesticated foxes are really cute... They are like cats or dogs running around begging to be petted and spoiled...

U steal the magazine.?
ReplyDeletedibs on grizzly bears!
ReplyDeletei still remember how ridiculous those theories about innate and latent knowledge sounds to me when i was in 1st semester. but now (finally!) they make perfect sense. an indication of mind development and growing up?? hehe
