Universal Soldier : Day of Reckoning (2012)

A group of government's super soldiers went rogue... John (Scott Adkins) were assign to eliminate them... The mission was not a smooth one because John's artificial memory was messed up and he couldn't remember anything except the fact that his family was killed by Luc Deveraux (Jean Claude Van Damme)...

Before watching, I wasn't really sure on what to expect from this movie because I'm not familiar with the Universal Soldier franchise... My source of motivation to see it was the three names written on the posters - Jean Claude Van Damme, Scott Adkins, and Dolph Lundgren... Those three combined spelled EPIC ACTION MOVIE for me...

Well, personally, I didn't really like the mood set for the movie... I feel that this movie is rather depressing... There were no cool soundtracks played during the fights, the picture was often dark, the characters were so sad and serious...

Then, the story is very confusing from the beginning until every secret was spilt... I got that the director tried to create mystery and wanted to make it suspenseful however it didn't seem to work... The confusion in plot kinda turned me off a bit... Maybe I was confused because I didn't watch the previous instalments...

The good thing was the action scenes were great... The fights got more interesting when John finally remember his moves... The one on one fights were epic and satisfying! I also love the continuous single camera take on the scene where John went on a killing spree at the enemy's camp... I love it!

This movie is very gory... Fingers and toes chopped off, head drilled, skulls bashed... Blood and flesh everywhere... So messy...

As a conclusion, I would like to summarize by saying that I hate the depressing mood being set for the movie, the plot was very very very confusing but the action scenes were superb!

3 out of 5 stars
