Fright Night (2011)

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

When I was a kid, one of my favourite TV show series was Angel (besides The X-Files and Roswell) and watching the series made me fell in love with the concept of vampires... I think it's really cool to have fangs and super strength... A night lurker, battling monsters and other creatures for centuries... An immortal life... I love vampires so much that I even thought of surrendering myself to one so that it would turn me... Well, that was until the Twilight series came out...

Lets face it, after Twilight, if u admit that u wanna become a vamp, people would be calling u a fag... A glittering fag... Thanks to Edward Cullen... It kinda pissed me off... Vamps used to be so cool and frightening...

Now, thanks to Fright Night, vampires are scary again... Scary in a very very charming way...

THE STORY

Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) found himself having a vampire - Jerry (Colin Farrell) - as a neighbour and it's killing his other neighbours and friends... In order to protect his mother and girlfriend - Amy (Imogen Poots), Charlie who was a former geek had to battle Jerry and it was an exciting battle indeed...

AWESOME STUFF

Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell is the most handsome vampire ever (that's until u see his real form)... If u wanna debate with me with an argument that Edward Cullen is a better vampire then it means u haven't watched this movie and u don't know the real depiction of vampires according to legends... Farrell has succeeded in restoring the reputation of vampires by bringing out their true nature - manipulative, charming and scary... My words won't do justice on how bad-ass he was as a vampire in this movie... U need to witness it yourself...

Even though I'm a straight guy, after watching, I couldn't get his beautiful yet sinister smile out of my mind...

The Original Vampire Concept

This movie is a reminder for all of us on the true nature of vampires... True vamps do not glitter! They turn into ash under the sun... True vamps also don't have mirror images... True vamps cannot enter a house uninvited... True vamps are manipulative... True vamps are scary... True vamps rules!!!!

As much as I love the modern depiction of vampires in the Underworld series, it felt great to see the original being revived...

NOT SO AWESOME STUFF

It's not a Horror (for me)

Actually, I don't know how to describe it... Yes, I love Colin Farrell and he was indeed handsome and scary at the same time as a vampire, but I categorize this movie as horror... Maybe it's because I'm Asian... For most Asians, western ghosts and monsters are not as scary as the ones in Asia... I mean, if u compare the handsome vampires with Asia's wailing Pontianaks, I'll say Pontianaks are scarier...

You want horror? Try watching Thai's Coming Soon...

Luckily there are many suspenseful scenes... For instance, the part when Charlie tried to save one of Jerry's snack - the part when they played hide and seek behind the stairs in Jerry's lair... Another awesome scene was after Jerry got ran over... Awesome...

Okey, in simpler words, the vampires are scary, but not the movie... The movie is not scary, it's suspenseful... Get it?

ALL IN ALL

I love this movie mainly because of the original depiction of vampires and Colin Farrell...

3 out of 5 stars...
