I'm not really a fan of old movies and because of that, no matter how much hype the movie Blade Runner (1982), I've never actually watched it.
Because of that, I went to the cinemas for this year's Blade Runner 2049 blind. I didn't know what to expect. I didn't watch the trailers, didn't read any reviews. The main reason why I chose to watch it is because Ryan Gosling is sort of like my man crush.
SYNOPSIS:
Officer K is a Replicant - bioengineered humans produced by Wallace Corp. His job is to kill the older Replicant 'models' that is proved to be rebellious and violent in nature. In this movie, K pursues the child of a deceased Replicant, which should be nonexistent as Replicants cannot / should not get pregnant.
PRO:
The best thing about this movie is it's a visual masterpiece. The pictures are so beautifully captured and are a beautiful mix of real and computer generated images. It's like, I can pause the movie at any moment and get a picture that I would gladly use as my PC wallpaper. I love it.
Besides that, another pro is, ahem, Ana de Armas. Well, haha, I mean, the cast. Not specifically Ana. The whole cast members are spot on. Very talented and awesome actors. But the one that unexpectedly steals the limelight for me is Ana who played Joi. I'm sure everyone (MEN) agrees with me that this movie needs more Joi. She plays her role so well. Not to mention, the chemistry between Ana and Ryan is so tight. So lit.
Apart from that, O. M. G. That plot twist! At first, I thought that that one (I don't want to spoil it) is the plot twist but towards the end, there is another mind blowing and heart wrenching twist. I said heart wrenching because it made Officer K cry and when he cried, I cried. Urgh. Ryan Gosling is such a good actor.
CON:
The pacing is quite slow but it's understandable since the genre is neo-noir sci-fi. In other words, it's a police detective doing police detective stuff movie. So, expect a lot of evidence digging and investigating by Officer K. Therefore, this movie is definitely not for everyone. I mean, I love the movie! I love it. But the people sitting behind me hated it. I could hear them commented that it's a snooze fest. "WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE THIS??", I heard one of them say. I guess they expected it to be action packed like Star Trek (the new ones). The action parts are good but quite scarce. Like I said, it's neo-noir, not an action movie.
ALL IN ALL:
I love this movie for it's visual appearances and awesome performance from the casts but I would not watch it when I'm tired or sleepy because I would fall asleep because of the slow pacing.
4 stars out of 5!
