RoboCop

There are so many remakes and reboots of franchise in the world of movies nowadays... The most recent ones are The Clash of the Titans, The Karate Kid, A Nightmare of Elm Street, and not to mention the all new Batman series...

Some are successful while others tarnished the great reputation built by the originals...

But I'm here not to analyze any of the remakes... I'm ranting here to utter a mere question that has been lingering in my mind lately...

"Is there anyone out there up to the challenge of making a remake of RoboCop??"

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, RoboCop...   In case u didn't know or u forgot, the story centers on a police officer who is brutally murdered and subsequently re-created as a super-human cyborg known as "RoboCop"...

Like any other robots that we see, RoboCop can scan the situation and judge what kind of action should be taken... His main weapon is his gun that is kept in his thigh... He can also detach his hand and replace it with a rocket launcher... The main forte of RoboCop is his steel body... Almost nothing can penetrate him... He's like a human tank...

Robocop's gun in kept his thigh...

Robocop's detachable hand...

The young ones must not be familiar with it but those who are at the same age as I am and older will find themselves having flashbacks of the time they sat in front of their big ass TVs watching RoboCop movies on TV2 as soon as they read the title of this entry...

I used to love the RoboCop sequels because they're freakin' awesome... (There are three sequels - RoboCop (1987), RoboCop 2 (1990) and RoboCop (1993)...)

Actually, there are news about the remake... In 2005, Sony Pictures reported to be working on it... However, the project was halted due to unknown reasons... Then, there were more rumors about the upcoming RoboCop sequel scheduled to be released in 2010... But, it seems that the rumors aren't true for no trailers or images of the film being shot released to the press... Hmm... Bummer...

I guess it's hard to remake RoboCop because nowadays, most robots in the movies do not move like they're in stop motion pictures anymore... Nowadays, robots move faster and they are meaner... Whereas, RoboCop, in the ancient movies, move slower than an old man with Alzheimer (no offense to old people...)

Take a look at the ones in Terminator for example:

The androids are mean, strong and fast... Heck, some even come in the form of liquid metal...

Then, we have i-Robot

They look queer (again, no offense) but believe me, they're really fast... They even can leap from one building to another without breaking a sweat... I mean, without breaking an oil... Urghh... Whatever

So, how can RoboCop compete with these guys? He would be wrecked in seconds...  The producers might have to re-create RoboCop by giving him a more futuristic feature such as faster movement and more stylish looking physical look...

By doing that, however, they can anger the fans of RoboCop because it wont be original... I think that's why the producers keep on putting the RoboCop project on halt... They need to figure out how to revamp the robotic features so that it is suitable for modern audience but at the same time, make it as original as possible...

Now that's really a challenge... Anyone wants to take it? If someone did, I hope he or she does not destroy the movie franchise...

:-)
