Me: Lets go watch World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles!!!
Girlfriend: I don't watch alien movies... Aliens are stupid...
Me: ...........
So, we ended up watching Unknown, starring Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger...
STORY
Dr. Martin Harris (Neeson), awakened after a car accident in Berlin to discover that his wife (January Jones) suddenly didn't recognize him anymore and another man had assumed his identity... Therefore, he was on a mission to find out who he really was and sort out the confusion... His path was blocked by disbelieving authorities and mysterious men who were out to get him... Luckily, he was able to seek help from a reluctant source (Diane Kruger) and together, they plunged themselves into a world of confusion in order to sort out reality from imaginary...
This movie is based on the Didier van Cauwelaert novel, "Out of My Head"...
PLUS POINTS
Liam Neeson
The thing I like the most about Neeson is his deep voice and how he cleverly manipulate it in order to create tense situation in his acting... He has a voice of extortion which can be pretty useful if u wanna scare someone over the phone...
"I got your daughter, deliver me the cash or you'll never see her again... Even if you do, you'll find her inside a hole with a hole between her plucked out eyes..."
With that line and his voice over the phone, u would freak out like hell...
Choosing Neeson for the main character is brilliant as he had proved himself to be worthy to play out this kind of role in the movie Taken which also required him to portray tense emotions as he tried to put bits and pieces together in order to unravel a huge mystery...
Furthermore, as an old dog, Neeson still manage to kick ass... Though, he's a bit messy in this movie compared to Taken and The A-Team because he had no memory on how to combat...
All in all, Neeson contributed a lot to the success of this movie...
The Twists
Like my honey pumpkin said, this movie is a real mind-fuck... The plot is very exhilarating because there are so many twists and surprises... I was like, "What the hell is going on here? Who is the real Martin Harris? Why can't his own wife recognize him? Is he insane or what? Who are those people who after him? Are they Germany spies?" through out the movie... Believe me, you'll be stuck on your seats like I did because u can't afford to miss a single event as it would lead to deep confusion...
My stomach hurt badly but I refused to go to the toilet and miss a scene... Yup, true story...
However, some twists were predictable because they were revealed in the trailers... For instance, the part when the wife didn't recognize his own husband... That kinda spoiled the excitement a bit... Damn trailers...
THE MINUS POINTS
The Ending
*Spoiler alert* I cannot agree with the ending... If Martin Harris' real identity is a professional killer who was in the same team as the ones who were out to get him, then why jeopardize the mission even after getting his memory back? Why didn't he just proceed with his original mission?
The memory confusion left him with a conscience? Well, that's kinda lame... If I were him, I would just kill everybody and grab the ground breaking formula and sell it in the black market and live happily ever after with Diane Kruger in a castle... Though Diane might not agree with the killing everybody part but as a professional, I would manage to do it secretly...
All in all, if you like Liam Neeson and his previous movie, Taken, and twists and turns in a movie, you'll sure to like this one... Think of it as a lighter version of the Bourne Identity series...
3 out of 5 stars...
